- The primary goals of Themester are three-fold: 1. To advance the teaching mission of the College in providing students with a liberal education informed by study across disciplines in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities; 2. To encourage educational programs that extend from the campus to the community and state; 3. To promote undergraduate research on a topic of socio-cultural, historical, or scientific importance.
- For this reason, Themester organizing committees and subcommittees of consequence should include the active participation of undergraduate students.
- While the primary audience for Themester is undergraduate students in the College and across the University, one of Themester’s priorities is to reach out to the community, state, and nation, including College alumni. For this reason, in organizing Themester activities, the College collaborates not only with students and faculty, but also with community groups and with the Office of Advancement.
- Each year a Faculty Themester Committee is appointed, charged with the responsibility of organizing events, classes, and activities connected to Themester. Its budgetary decisions will be tracked by a College staff member and must be approved by the College’s Budget Office before any written contract or agreement is finalized. Like most College committees, this one is considered advisory to the Dean. In most cases, this Committee’s recommendations will be followed, though the College reserves the right, on occasion, to disagree with a particular recommendation. In this event, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies will call a special meeting of the committee to discuss the matter. Faculty should also be advised that while it receives funds to spend on Themester programming, final spending decisions are the College’s. For example, funding for Themester is unlike a fellowship or research grant in that, on occasion, it may prove unwise to spend every dollar allotted. In this event, unspent money will be retained by the College.
- Procedures for soliciting, evaluating, and funding proposals:
- Curricular proposals should be submitted in early fall of the year preceding the Themester to accommodate scheduling deadlines
- Deadlines for extra-curricular proposals may have two deadlines, one in late fall and another in early spring
- All proposals should be evaluated and rank ordered before any dollars awards are made
- Proposals not funded after first deadline may be re-submitted and re-evaluated for the second round of deliberations
- Late submissions will be evaluated (or not) at the discretion of the committee in consultation with the Associate Dean
- Themester Faculty Committees should file a brief report at the end of the term intended to improve the quality of the event and the process of organizing it.
