Themester at the College is intended to foster innovation and collaboration, to inspire curiosity and discovery, and to enable intellectual synergy. Combining academic courses, public lectures and exhibits, film showings and other events, Themester engages students, faculty, and the entire community in a collective learning experience about an issue of enduring significance.
About
One compelling theme—many perspectives
Each fall semester, the College of Arts and Sciences focuses on a compelling theme that opens inquiry across the full spectrum of the liberal arts, from the arts and humanities to the social and physical sciences. We coordinate undergraduate courses and remarkable special events focused on that theme.
Themester topics move across the disciplines and affect everyone throughout their lives. Engaging the broad knowledge base on our campus and beyond, Themester provides a wide range of points of view in a rich variety of forms: classes, workshops, lectures, exhibits, performances, and much more.
Our Themester topic for Fall 2022 is Identity and Identification.

Themester is a unique but fundamental part of the liberal education offered at IU. It takes students and faculty across the curriculum to find common themes of enduring and urgent significance. It goes beyond the curriculum as well, to take the campus into the labs and workshops, communities and public forums, theaters and marketplaces that give rich and continuing meaning to a student’s education.
