From items on grocery store shelves to tropes on movie and TV screens, “Wenches, Witches, and Welfare Queens” ask students to grapple with the historically constructed nature of images and identities, analyze the manner in which identities can constrain peoples’ life chances and choices, and consider, ultimately, how the ability to craft identities for oneself, and for others, is about power.
