Course Description

In this course we explore the philosophical foundations of human and animal
cognition. The first quarter of the course consists of a traditional exploration of the computational theory of mind and responses to it. In the second quarter we examine animal cognition and how it relates to human nature and human cognition, from ancient times to the present. In the last half of the course we explore recent and contemporary debates in animal cognition research and we contextualize those debates with respect to theories of human cognition.
