Course Description

This course introduces Uralic languages and the diverse cultures of Finns, Hungarians and Estonians and their linguistic relatives living as minorities in Russia and Scandinavia through their close connection to the animal world. The relationship with animals was extremely significant in the North Eurasian forest zone traditional cultures. Oral poetry, traditional and modern art and film help to explore this relationship as reflected in the languages and the identities of these groups, including in the contexts of colonialism, assimilation and globalization.
