Outreach and Communications Internship

Time commitment

  • Fall 2023: Approximately 3–5 hours a week during the fall semester, mid-August to early December
  • Spring 2023: Approximately 1 hour a week orientation and training during the spring semester, late March through April*

Themester 2023 Light and Truth program will be presented in the fall. If a student cannot take part in spring training (currently abroad, for example), this is not disqualifying. Apply for the internship and note your limited availability.

Qualifications

  • Strong academic or personal interest in Themester 2023's theme, Light and Truth
  • Interest in practicing or developing strong writing and/or verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and generate ideas
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Social media literacy a plus
  • Strong copy-editing skills a plus
  • Familiarity with InDesign or Photoshop a plus
  • Interest and willingness to develop the aforementioned skills
  • Preference given to College of Arts and Sciences majors and minors (including includes students pursuing degrees in The Media School, Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies) or students planning to declare majors and minors in the College

Duties + responsibilities

The general duty of a communications and outreach intern is to support the director of academic initiatives in communicating with students and the broader community about Themester, a College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate program, and assisting with select Themester events. An outreach and communications intern’s duties could include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Communicate with IU and community partners to gather information about Themester events and activities
  • Help create and implement a social media plan
  • Help craft ADA-friendly social media alt text, graphics descriptions, and accessibility-minded web and calendar content
  • Help manage and update the Themester calendar
  • Help create print and online publicity materials
  • Help write promotional content
  • Create news briefs and feature articles related to Themester plans and activities for the News+Events section of the Themester website
  • Connect IU students and community members to Themester through promotional activities such as the College Expo
  • Represent the Themester office at events and activities
  • Assist in the implementation of events and activities such as Themester's First Thursday presence and Themester faculty/student lunch discussions
  • Assist at Themester activities as needed
  • Document Themester events and activities

Compensation

The Themester internship is a paid internship with an hourly rate of $12 an hour.
