"I was inspired to organize this event because of some personal experiences I have had as a Latina performer," Martínez said. "The impact of [Miranda’s] Hollywood-crafted persona has continued to define what people in the United States expect from Latine entertainers—especially those who are female-presenting."  

Martínez says that Robert Sierra's piece allows for "a fictionalized version" of Carmen Miranda to address the rise of her fame and her ultimate decline. Miranda is known for her popularization of the samba, music with an Afro-Brazilian origin. She is further known for her hit song “Chica Chica Boom Chic,” produced in 1941, and a large portion of her career was defined and peaked in the United States.  

"I Am Carmen Miranda" will be rescheduled for the spring semester. "At this time, subject to approval of the School of Music, we are looking at a couple of dates in February that will be viable options, with an additional concrete backup date in April," Martínez said.
