Johnson further explains the difference between urban and rural societies' viewpoints on queer culture, and how being queer in rural America isn't always what we think.

The guest for this two-parter episode is Dr. Colin R. Johnson, an Associate Professor of Gender Studies. Johnson's research focuses on the history of gender and sexuality in the United States during the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Other areas of interest include queerness in rural America, in which Johnson has written two books on (Just Queer Folks: Gender and Sexuality in Rural America and Queering the Countryside: New Frontiers in Rural Queer Studies).
Johnson's current project plans to examines the historical relationship between “anti-social” behavior and sexual alterity, focuses on solitary figures like the hermit and recluse.
