In this episode, Dr. Amrita Chakrabarti Myers discusses her course "Wenches, Witches and Welfare Queens," and the evolution of the black woman stereotype in media. Myers comments what it means to change those stereotypes in today's society, and what can be done to include the correct representation in the ever-changing media.

Our guest for this episode is Dr. Amrita Chakrabarti Myers, Director of Graduate Studies at the Indiana University Department of History and Associate Professor of the Departments of History and Gender Studies. Dr. Myers' predominantly research interests center around race, gender, freedom, and power, especially how these interact and connect with black women in the Old South. Dr. Myers earned her Ph.D. at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and her recent work includes Forging Freedom: Black Women and the Pursuit of Liberty in Antebellum Charleston, a book that relays the experience of free black women in the south from 1790 to 1860.
